Premium Leather Furniture Starts With the Right Hide – Here's Why...
Why We Hand-Select Every Leather Hide: Inside H|F Atelier's Commitment to Quality

At HUNTEDFOX and H|F Atelier, every leather piece starts long before it becomes an ottoman, headboard, or custom bench. It starts with a hands-on inspection of every single hide. No shortcuts. No mass orders. Just a relentless commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity.
We don’t just design leather furniture—we build heirloom-quality pieces that hold stories, stand the test of time, and age with grace. That’s why our team personally selects each leather hide, one by one, with eyes trained for texture, tone, natural markings, and character.
The Truth About Peeling Leather: What Big Box Brands Don’t Tell You
Many mass-produced furniture companies—including West Elm, CB2, and others—often use what's called corrected grain leather, bonded leather, or PU-coated split leather to cut costs. While it might look like genuine leather at first, it’s far from it.
❌ Corrected Grain or "Milled" Leather
This leather is heavily sanded and coated to remove imperfections, then embossed with an artificial grain pattern to mimic full grain. The surface is often sealed with a plastic-like finish (polyurethane or acrylic), which gives it a uniform look but blocks breathability. Over time, this finish can crack, peel, or flake—especially in dry or high-use environments.
❌ Bonded Leather
This is not real leather. It’s made from leather scraps mixed with plastics and adhesives, then rolled out into sheets and coated to look like the real thing. It’s cheaper, but it degrades quickly and can start peeling in as little as a year.
Why We Don’t Use It
We never use bonded, faux, or corrected leathers—ever. Every H|F piece is crafted from genuine full grain or top grain hides, selected by hand and made to last for decades, not months. When our leather wears, it ages beautifully—it doesn't fall apart.
Full Grain vs. Top Grain: What’s the Difference?
If you’ve ever shopped for leather furniture, you’ve likely seen terms like “full grain” or “top grain.” While they may sound similar, the difference is significant—and it shows in both durability and aesthetic integrity.
Full Grain Leather
This is the highest quality leather available, taken from the very top layer of the hide. It retains the natural grain, markings, and imperfections that give each piece a rich, lived-in texture. Full grain leather develops a patina over time, deepening in character the more it’s used—ideal for clients who love timeless, rugged luxury.
At H|F Atelier, our signature full grain leather is often used in bespoke headboards, leather banquettes, and statement ottomans. No two are alike. It’s the leather you can feel—soft yet structured, organic yet refined.
Top Grain Leather
Top grain is sanded and refinished to remove natural imperfections. While still high quality, it loses some of the hide’s unique surface texture in exchange for a more uniform appearance. We use top grain leathers selectively, especially when a sleek, minimal aesthetic is desired for hospitality-grade seating or contemporary interiors.
Why Hand-Selection Matters
Unlike most furniture manufacturers who order pre-cut or factory-treated leathers in bulk, we hand-inspect every hide before it touches our workroom floor. We assess:
-
Grain consistency
-
Thickness and flexibility
-
Natural stretch and durability
-
Color depth and unique surface markings
This process ensures that every piece of leather furniture from HUNTEDFOX or H|F Atelier is truly one-of-a-kind—with no fillers, no bonded leather, and no surprises.
